Zune 2.3 Review - Wireless Syncing Works Much Better

As posted earlier, Microsoft has updated the Zune desktop software to 2.3 today. We've had a chance to play with it around here at ZuneLuv.com and have one very nice response to report.

Wireless syncing works much better now.

Previously, wireless syncing was hit and miss. It 'worked,' yes, but was very flaky as best.

We've wireless synced 2 Zune 30s and a Zune 8. All did well in the network and they got everything they were supposed to get.

Also worked the first time on each.

Great job Zune.

Zune Updates Software To 2.3

Around 10a Pacific today, Microsoft is to start pushing an update to version 2.3 of the software. According to Zune Insider, "no new features" but last time we heard that they integrated subscription to Podcasts into the firmware.

There have been some issues with reliability (specifically with sync) and it is not only good to see that Microsoft is "on it" but that they actually have the starts of a solution for us.

We don't have access yet but will download when we do.

And for you smarty pants - yes, the Zune Firmware is already at 2.3, this is a desktop software update.

Anyone else have access to the new update? Anything to report?

Zune Hack #6 - Sync Your Zune With iTunes?

According to a posting over at Zune Boards, it just might be possible to hack your Zune so that you can sync it with programs other than the Zune software. It has been tested with Windows Media Player, WinAmp, Media Monkey and "should" be able to work with iTunes. See the post for more.

The program is called "zAlternator" and it is at "release candidate" levels. Looks easy

As with all hacks we must warn you, proceed at your own risk.

But once you do, please report how it went.

7 Zune “Wins” At CES

Now that I'm back from CES, I have some final thoughts on Zune at CES, and have for you 7 big wins for our favorite media player at the Consumer Electronics Show.

Zune In The Booth. You'll see my picture in the previous post but it was so nice to see a Zune booth that promoted Podcasting as part of the whole package that Zune offers. You'll notice the wording was/is "3 million+ songs, videos, podcasts and DRM-free mp3s." Instead of "pieces" of it, the entire story is being told.

As much as this is a blog about Zune and Podcasting, I can't tell you how much I enjoy the music side of this too. The Zune Pass subscription lets me enjoy music in ways I never could before.

But the story is add that to "the mix" of Podcasting and other options - and we got something very cool.

And we do have something very cool.

Zune In The Keynote. Yes, I complained that Bill didn't mention Zune in the keynote much at all but then I grew up (a little sleep will do that for you) and realized that the Zune imagery mixed into the even bigger Microsoft story is a very good thing indeed.

Zune ain't going the way of Bob.

Zune In The Story. This is a subset of the first two - but is really important. Zune was there because Microsoft wanted Zune there to tell the story that they're putting together. It might have been a dig at Apple TV, but Bach's comment that "this isn't just a hobby for us" is very telling indeed. CES 2008 wasn't Zune begging Microsoft for some space, this was Microsoft saying Zune, help us tell the story.

Zune Leadership And Marketing Together. So who helped tell the story, was it the token marketing types? Was it booth babes? No, in heavy booth duty (he couldn't even come to my presentation on Podcasting because of his booth duty requirements) was Rob Greenlee - Podcast Programming Lead. Microsoft sent their best to tell this story.

Podcast Gets Respect. To some, the Podcast represents amateur media production. I can't say that every Podcaster is innocent of propagating that meme but the Podcast channel is so very important and Microsoft has embraced it fully, by name. They've done so in the top level menus for the Zune (it ain't there for the iPod, check), and they've done it for the story, mentioned above, of what the Zune is all about.

To this day my Mom still thinks she needs an Apple to listen to what I do. Now that Microsoft (she's still pretty sure there are about 20 people in the company and that Bill Gates personally asked me to write those FrontPage books way back when) talks about Podcasting, my Mom might start paying attention - and seeing what her son has been up to (for Bill personally, of course).

Podcasting needed, and I'm gonna get some flack for this, Microsoft's respect to get to the next level.

We got it.

It was all over CES.

Apple Was Missing. Everybody and their Mom seemed to have some dock for the iPod (read about Creative's funny device on my other blog) but Apple wasn't there. Rob Greenlee, Podcast Program Lead was in the booth but Apple won't let their Podcasting people even tell the public what they do for a living.

Yes, I know, Apple has a show next week. I can't wait to see what Jobs unveils but the story next week is Apple … not Consumer Electronics. Microsoft and the Zune fit into the Consumer Electronics world. I might not have been a big fan of Gates' keynote but the fact of the matter was they asked him to kick off the event with his keynote - which he's done for a long time.

Microsoft is part of the bigger story.

Apple is their own story.

I want Podcasting to be part of the bigger story.

Microsoft Was Not. They weren't missing at all.

It was a pleasure.

Gonna be a good year for the Zune and Podcasting.

Zune At CES - My Thoughts

As I mentioned earlier, not much in the whole Gates keynote. Wish they would have said something about Zune but … at least we saw her picture.

It was nice, it was very nice, to have a Zune presence in the Microsoft area that actually knew what Podcasting was all about. Not only did we have the word "Podcasting" on the media but … they sent their Podcast Program Lead (Rob Greenlee) to man the booth as well.

Below is a picture of on top of the booths that Zune was demonstrated in.

Yes, I get the irony that I took that picture on my iPhone.

Play Your Zune In The Car

There are lots of options for playing your Zune in the car. We'll examine a few of them here.

The easiest choice for many is a standard cassette adapter used on for any MP3 player. Plug the chord into your Zune and plug the cassette into your car's cassette deck.

Looking for something a bit more slick? An FM transmitter is another great choice. Again, plug the jack into your Zune, find an open FM station and broadcast accordingly. Remember that you can use a transmitter designed for any other product - as long as they use the basic jack. In our experience, the cheaper FM transmitters tend to easily catch static. If you are going to go this route, a reputable company such as Belkin is a good way to go.

What about the "official" Zune Travel Pack from Microsoft? It's a fine product, just doesn't do anything better than any of the other options out there.

Will we see car stereo systems that you plug into your Zune? Soon.

Christmas Traffic For ZuneLuv.com

As reported in SFGate.com, Hitwise has claimed a 299% increase in Zune.net traffic this Christmas over last. Also interesting of note is that no jump for iTunes has been reported. Obviously, iTunes has the dominant traffic in this arena but fascinating none the less.

How did ZuneLuv.com traffic do on Christmas? We saw 590 uniques Christmas 2006 and 4692 uniques Christmas 2007. That's a 841% increase. Part of it is we're getting bigger as a site but on Christmas Eve, the traffic was only 1564 uniques - 1373 the day before. The increase, no matter how you look at it, is considerable.

WebProNews points out some numbers on the iTunes v Zune traffic numbers. According to them, Hitwise stated "iTunes remained the predominant download site with a market share over 6 times larger than Zune.net."

If you consider the 100 million iPods to 1 million Zunes number we keep hearing batted around, these are impressive numbers indeed.

Zune 2.3 Firmware Includes Great Podcast Support

The Zune 2.3 firmware upgrade brought some very cool Podcasting features that, simply, aren't getting enough attention.

As mentioned in Zune-Online, subscribe and unsubscribe options are now made available with all Podcast files.

How does this work? It's fabulous.

If someone shares a Podcast with you and you like what you hear, you can subscribe to the Podcast right within the Zune device. The next time you sync up your device with the player, you will be subscribed to that content.

And the converse is true as well. If you don't like what you've got, you can unsubscribe from the device too.

Great job Zune team. This device continues to get better and impress us more and more.
