Zune are going all out to get Zuners on board with their Zune music store. And to help us get motiviated (any that aren’t already!) , To win a Zune HD (valued at ) and a year of free music, all we have to do is:

The Zune give away ends February 15, 2010 - so get your free trial asap! The free trial lets you try out the Zune pass and see just how cool it is. With a Zune Pass  you can stream and download as much music as you want (but you can’t keep any of it on the free trial).

A lot of Zune owners do not realize that they can get neat free stuff from iTunes. There are a lot of great free stuff available through the iTunes store - podcasts, for example. Also, a lot of music websites provide free music - but they auto download to iTunes. Not a problem as we will explain below.

First, you have to understand that the Zune supports AAC.  This is also the default file format used by iTunes when you rip a CD.  In other words, both Zune and iTunes use the AAC file format (though iTunes does use other formats as well - eg MP3).  So if you have a collection of music already in iTunes and have just been given a Zune - rest assured that you can play them on your Zune!

To show you how easy is is to get iTunes music onto your Zune we will go through a simple example.  Lets go to Soundclick where there are thousands of songs offered under creative commons license (and so, free to us):

There are literally hundreds of thousands of songs available across 17 different genres for us to download to our Zunes for free. For example, if you love the Latin genre there are over 2500 free Latin-genre songs that can be downloaded to your Zune! The trick is to know how to do it! First, Look at the long list of songs available. Choose one and then click through to the3 download page:

When you click on “download” you will get a box opening that gives you the option to open with iTunes. Select that option:

And voila! It will now be in your iTunes libarary:

When you install the Zune software, it automatically scans and adds songs from the iTunes folder. The Wowzune team recommends that you always rip your CDs in iTunes so they’ll work on all your music players (including your iPod/iPhone). You don’t have to do anything special - just rip them in iTunes, and the Zune software discovers them the next time you start it up.

The only problem comes when you try to play DRM-protected songs  as are all the songs that are purchased from the iTunes Music Store. Zune can’t play those songs!  (OK, there is a way to strip the DRM off by burning to CD and then re-ripping). But if most of the music you have stored there has been ripped from your offline CD collection, or from various sites around the web, then these will not be DRM protected and you will be able to play them on your Zune.

The initial release of the new Zune HD included 8 free games. Zune have since released another six free 3D games for the HD - making it even more inviting to get the Zune HD.

The games include - 1) PGR: Ferrari Edition, 2) Lucky Lane Bowling, 3) Vans Sk8: Pool Service, 4) Piano, 5)Checkers and 6)Audiosurf: Tilt.

Again, not all of these games are all that interesting. But we liked PGR: Ferrari Edition. Take at look at this demo to see why! And then get the Zune HD added to the Christmas list of whoever is gonna buy you something real special for Christmas!

The Wowzune team reckon that this game is a big step up from checkers, Sudoku, etc.

A bit different, but one we also liked was the Piano game App for Zune:

Have you been trying to figure out how to get some of the great freebies from iTunes to Zune? Or, you can see there are some great movies or music etc on iTunes but don’t know how to get it onto your Zune?

Well, there is some great  FREE software available that lets us do just that. Vuze (yeah, we know, weirdly similar to Zune) have developed software that will convert files we have on our PC so that they can be synced to our mobile devices. So first step is to get the iTunes files onto our PC.

Download the iTunes music or film/video that you want to your PC (try this with a freebie first, just to get comfie with the system).

Then just follow the following steps:

First up: Download the Vuze software. Then follow the super simple directions on how to get your PC files converted by Vuze.

2) Put your Vuze downloads in a folder of their own.

3) Then go into the zune software; settings; software - and add a folder for music (and/or videos if you have movie or TV show files you want to watch on your Zune)

4) Map the location for the Vuze download section. The software will start to pull the songs (etc) in - then you can sync them to your Zune.

Well, readers of this blog know that we are not tech geeks but just Zune lovers that spend our time finding quality free Zune downloads - Muisc, Movies, TV Shows, eBooks, and games, for our readers. So, when we take a look at the new Zune HD, we are really only interested in it as a user - and not a tech geek. There are plently of tech reviews out there on the web, anyway!

As a user, three things in particular capture our interest, now that the Zune HD has been released (other than the features already discussed in a previous post).

First - we love the cool colors! The pic says it all!

Second - We love that free games that have been included. The 8 free games are: Chess,  Goo Splat, Hexic, Sudoku, Space Battle 3, Shell Game, Of the Future, and Texas Hold ‘Em. You can have a look at some of them in the following Video. They are not that exciting, to be honest. Nothing like the free games that were released for theiPhone last Septemebr, that’s for sure:

Third observation - we don’t like the ads that we have to watch while the game loads. Its not that they are a big pain. Its just that we don’t like being taken advantage of. It kind of feels like the free game are just bait being used by advertisers. Much as we object to the aggressive way Apple operates, at least their free games (and there are hundreds of them) don’t have ads!!

Finally, we reckon the price is great. We get a lot for our money, and the promise is that there are a lot of great Zune apps to come. We will keep you posted.

In a previous post we showed you how to get free movies on Zune in four easy clicks.

This is a great system but has two problems. Firstly,  it does not convert “right protected” DVDs. Secondly, it has a big watermark in the middle of the screen!

And, the big problem is that all the videos we really wanted to convert are “right-protected”.

Now, the Zune is basically just viewing and listening device, right? - so why should we pay for yet another version of a movie we already have, just so we can watch it on our Zune?

We went looking for a solution! And we found one! Yeah, we know, we are great!

Firstly, you will need this great, super simple, FREE  bit of software called DVD43.  It sits quietly on your PC unlocking DVDs in the background, so that they can be converted and transferred to our Zune! (Rest assure,  it does nothing to the DVD, itself, just unlocks the code as it plays so that it can be “read”)

This free software allows us to now use TransferMy Video to convert all our DVDs to play on our Zune!

Whenever a music artist puts out a new album, there is the chance that there will be a free MP3 on offer to promote it. We have posted about some of these on WowZune in the past. And as we all like to follow the latest news on our fav bands etc, its easy enough to grab these while they are available (often for only a very short time)

What is more difficult, is to knowing when other free MP3s that we might like, get offered. That’s when its handy to have a list of sites that specialize in offering free MP3s that mean free music for our Zunes.

We posted about one last week. And DLTunes is another one. Again, they just want us to join their site - and this just takes our email address. In return we get 10 free MP3s to download. AND, you can check if its your kind of music, first - as they publish their current list for us to see before we decide to sign up.
